RegionsBuffalo, NY Hodgson Russ is headquartered in Buffalo, New York, in the historic Guaranty Building. Buffalo is home to world-class architecture, great restaurants, numerous cultural events, and stirring sports teams. We've listed some of our favorite things to do and tried to articulate why we think living in Buffalo is so great -- but no two Buffalonians' lists or reasons would be the same. Take a few minutes to explore the web sites we've listed below, and you'll probably start constructing your own list of interesting things to see and do in Buffalo. Buffalo offers all the appeal of a big city with few of the hassles, and none of the pretensions. People here are famously friendly and the region's activities and opportunities are accessible to everyone. It's a livable city with an earthy sophistication: the same people you see in the afternoon at a Buffalo Bisons' baseball game might be spotted that evening at the Irish Classical Theatre. The city's navigability makes this possible, but its citizens' diverse interests make this happen. Magnificent Lake Erie is within walking distance of our offices, and during the summer months Buffalonians enjoy sailing, fishing, or just lying on one of our numerous beaches. In the winter people enjoy skiing at numerous local resorts. If you prefer watching professional sports, you'll find that fans turn out in droves for Sabres' hockey games, Bills' and Destroyers' football games, Bisons' baseball games, and Blizzard soccer games. You can head out of our office in any direction and encounter one of Buffalo's internationally-renowned architectural gems. We have vibrant city neighborhoods with distinct ethnic and cultural identities -- you can find a festival or celebration of some sort on any weekend in the summer. We benefit, both professionally and culturally, from our proximity to Canada. Tourists move in both directions across the numerous bridges that link Ontario and Western New York. Buffalonians looking for a weekend get-away with international flair head north to Toronto (just a two hour drive); Niagara Falls, Ontario; or Niagara-on-the-Lake, voted one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Buffalo's long investment in jazz continues to grow, with exciting shows and seasonal programs at places like the Calumet Arts Café and The Tralf. The Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, led by the dynamic JoAnn Falletta, develops innovative programming year after year, delivered in the acoustically perfect Kleinhan's Music Hall (designed by Eliel and Eero Saarinen). The Albright-Knox Art Gallery features an internationally-renowned modern art collection, while Hallwalls Arts Center showcases cutting-edge work from contemporary artists. The region's theatre is eclectic and exciting, offering regional premieres of internationally-known authors, challenging contemporary pieces and traveling Broadway shows. The cost of living in Buffalo remains low, while the quality of life here is second to none (compare the cost of living in Buffalo with your current community's cost of living at www.homefare.com). You can live a stone's throw from downtown in a beautiful old home. If you prefer the country, our suburbs and rural communities are mostly within a 25 minute commute of downtown. The Buffalo Niagara Region affords you both an exceptional quality of life and excellent professional opportunities. "I was born and raised in Seattle, Washington and went to college in the San Francisco Bay area. More than 30 years ago I was dragged across the country to Western New York by my (still) professor husband. Today, I am a Buffalo convert. Buffalo links: Arts & Entertainment Sports Museums, Architecture and Gardens Miscellaneous: At Hodgson Russ I provide business advice to entrepreneurs (not just technical input to middle management), and have had the opportunity to be a tax policy advisor both to the U.S. Congress and the U.S. Treasury. I maintain contacts with tax lawyers who are among the best across the country. I practice daily with an eclectic group of men and women who bring to the practice of law a variety of perspectives from their diverse backgrounds, from teaching art history to reporting for Time Magazine. Hodgson Russ has given me the platform from which to speak nationally and internationally and, with my colleagues, publish the leading book in a specialized area of tax law. The first day I came to Hodgson Russ, I met one of my mentors and a good friend, Don Lubick, our retired partner, who served as the top tax policy person in 3 Presidential Administrations. Don brought a broader vision to the practice of law, the policy perspective that today makes us all at Hodgson Russ better lawyers -- and people." Dianne Bennett
