Presentations in Session One: Tax Planning and Tax Compliance included "Lobbying for or Against a Proposed Change" (Mr. Roth and Paul R. Comeau), "Recent Enforcement Initiatives" (Mr. Roth), "Tax Audits and Tax Shelters, Including Recent Developments" (Alice A. Joseffer and Mr. Comeau), "Proposed Changes to Close 'Loopholes' and Raise Revenue" (Mr. Comeau), "Practical Tips for Defending a Civil Tax Investigation" (Ms. Joseffer), and "Discharging a Tax Liability (Canceling or Satisfying Assessments, Warrants, and Tax Liens)" (Richard L. Weisz). Session Two: In-House and Corporate Counsel Update offered "Practical Tips for Defending a Civil Tax Investigation" (Ms. Joseffer), "Customer Identification and the USA Patriot Act" (John F. State), and "Ethics Issues for In-House and Corporate Counsel" (Deborah L. Kelly). Paul R. Comeau is chair of Hodgson Russ. He concentrates his practice in taxation law, business planning law, and business acquisitions law. He has practiced tax law since 1973. Alice A. Joseffer is lead attorney in the Firm's Tax Dispute Resolution Practice Group. She counsels clients on a full range of tax issues, including business and personal planning. Deborah L. Kelly focuses her practice on commercial litigation and bankruptcy matters. She is a frequent writer in the area of mortgages and liens. Arthur J. Roth is special consultant to the Firm. His 30 years of public and private experience included serving as commissioner of the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance from 1999 to 2003. John F. State represents banks and other financial institutions in commercial asset-based lending and equipment leasing and financing transactions. Richard L. Weisz is a member of the Bankruptcy & Commercial Litigation Practice Group and represents debtors, creditors, and creditors' committees in Chapter 11 business reorganization proceedings.
