Cathy Fleming Travels to Cuba as Part of Legal System Research Program

Cathy Fleming, a partner in Hodgson Russ’s Business Litigation Practice Group in the firm’s New York City office, was part of a delegation of about 30 judges and lawyers that traveled recently to Cuba to research the country’s legal system. The trip, which was sanctioned by the U.S. State Department, was organized and sponsored by the New York Chapter of the National Association of Women Judges in cooperation with the National Union of Cuban Jurists (UNJC) and the Cuban Institute for Friendship with the People. The trip was designed as a research initiative related to both the Cuban and American legal systems.

Among other activities, the delegation took part in a discussion on the Cuban civil code and various legal issues at the UNJC headquarters; met with leaders of the Cuban Society of Civil Rights Law, along with other experts in the field, including professors from the University of Havana Law School; and analyzed and discussed various proceedings and cases with judges and other professionals from the provincial courts. Among other presenters, the delegates met with Mariel Castro, the daughter of current president Raul Castro and niece of Fidel Castro.
