BUFFALO, N.Y. — Leslie R. Kellogg, Marla Waiss, and Jessica S. Wiltse, attorneys in Hodgson Russ LLP's General/International Tax Practice Group, authored the 2005 edition of the Canadian Companion to 1040 Preparation and Planning. Ms. Kellogg and Ms. Waiss wrote the 2004 edition of this companion as well.

The book is an extensive treatise on the U.S. tax rules and filing obligations that apply to Canadians. It provides guidance to help Canadian tax preparers understand U.S. tax issues and communicate them effectively to their clients, correctly determine their clients' residency status, differentiate between foreign-source and U.S.-source income, prepare applicable 2004 U.S. tax forms accurately and efficiently, and more. Now in its fifth edition, the Canadian Companion to 1040 Preparation and Planning is published by CCH Inc., a leading publisher of tax and business law information.

Ms. Kellogg,  Ms. Waiss, and Ms. Wiltse focus their practices on cross-border tax matters including structuring for business operations in the United States, offshore tax planning, tax considerations in private and public offerings, cross-border mergers and acquisitions, the tax implications of relinquishment of U.S. citizenship or lawful permanent resident ("green card") status, the application of the U.S. corporate anti-deferral regimes, and personal tax planning for business owners and their families.

Ms. Kellogg, Ms. Waiss, and Ms. Wiltse are all members of the Firm's Canada Practice Group. They have spoken at a variety of seminars discussing cross-border tax issues, and they are regular contributors to Canadian Tax Highlights, a publication of the Canadian Tax Foundation. Most recently, Ms. Kellogg wrote "IRS: Treaty Filings, ITINs" for the February 2004 issue and "Cross-Border Personal Services Income" in October 2004; Ms Waiss contributed "Retroactive QEF Elections" in April 2004 and "Data Sharing: IRS and CIS" in August 2004; and Ms. Wiltse published "U.S. Expatriation" in February 2005 and "'A' Reorgs Now Include Foreign Corporations" in March 2005. Ms. Waiss also belongs to the Firm's Tax Dispute Resolution Practice Group.

With approximately 200 attorneys practicing in all major areas of law, Hodgson Russ is the 205th largest law firm headquartered in the United States, as reported by the National Law Journal, and the largest law firm in upstate New York. It is one of approximately 100 firms in the country listed in America's Greatest Places to Work With a Law Degree, and one of the few U.S. law firms with a fully staffed office in Toronto, Ontario. In addition, Hodgson Russ was recently named one of the country's most admired employers by American Employer Digest. The Firm, which was established in 1817 and is among the oldest law firms in the U.S., is the only law firm that can count two former U.S. presidents, Millard Fillmore and Grover Cleveland, among its alumni.
