BUFFALO, N.Y. — Pamela Davis Heilman, Esq., a partner and vice president of community relations at Hodgson Russ LLP, was a participant in the 105th American Assembly meeting on "U.S.-Canada Relations," held recently at Arden House, Harriman, NY.
The goal of the bi-national meeting, co-sponsored by the American Assembly of Columbia University, the Canadian Institute for International Affairs, and the Canada Institute of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, was to examine how and where the institutions of the Canada-U.S. relationship should be rejuvenated. The assembly on "U.S.-Canada Relations" brought together past, current, and future leaders and decision-makers in government, academia, business, law, and the media to make specific, workable policy recommendations.
The Assembly has addressed the relationship between the United States and Canada every 20 years. The findings of the 1985 Assembly were influential in the development of the Canada-U.S. Free Trade Agreement in 1989, which ultimately led to the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) in 1994.
The Assembly featured many distinguished members, including co-chairs James Blanchard, former U.S. ambassador to Canada and former governor of Michigan, and Allan Gottlieb, former Canadian ambassador to the United States and former under secretary of state for external affairs; former Canadian Prime Minister Joe Clark; and John J. LaFalce, Canisius college professor and former U.S. congressman.
A report of findings and recommendations based on the meeting will be distributed to approximately 8,000 national leaders, policy makers, institutions, and interested citizens. It will also be posted to the Web sites of the three assembly co-sponsors.
Ms. Heilman is one of the lead lawyers in the Firm's cross-border Canada/U.S. practice and regularly counsels Canadian organizations and businesses considering expansion into the United States.
