Immigration Bill Stalled Again in U.S. Senate
On June 28, 2007, the Senate's second attempt at truncating debate on a bill to implement immigration reform via the cloture process has again failed. Senate bill S. 1639 -- which aimed to create a path to permanent residence for many illegal immigrants, toughen border security, and drastically alter the employment-based immigration system, among other provisions -- may be stalled indefinitely after a second vote to speed the decision-making process did not garner the necessary votes from U.S. Senators. This result mimmicked the outcome of a cloture motion on predecessor bill S. 1348 on June 8. Many commentators feel S. 1639 will not have the critical mass of support needed for approval during this Congressional session.
