New Plan to Eliminate FBI Name Check Backlog
On April 2, 2008, U.S. Citizenship & Immigration Services (USCIS) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) announced a joint plan to eliminate the current backlog of name checks pending with the FBI. By June 2009, the USCIS and FBI are planning to process 98 percent of all name checks within 30 days and the remaining two percent within 90 days.
FBI name checks are used in connection with applications for USCIS benefits to screen would-be immigrants or non-immigrants for threats to our nation and its citizens and to weed out people improperly or fraudulently seeking immigration benefits. Applications subjecting prospective beneficiaries to name checks include applications for naturalization, permanent residence, waivers of grounds of inadmissibility, and status as a temporary resident under Section 245A of the Immigration and Nationality Act, among others.
