Two More U.S. Airports Now Using 10-Finger Scans

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has begun collecting all 10 fingerprints from international visitors arriving in the United States at Chicago O'Hare International Airport and George Bush Houston Intercontinental Airport. Many entry points to the U.S. currently collect only two fingerprints from each international visitor. By collecting 10 fingerprints, DHS hopes to enhance security and ease the entries of legitimate travelers by more accurately verifying visitor's identities upon entry to the United States.

The U.S. collects biometrics (digital fingerprints and photographs) from most non-U.S. citizens between the ages of 14 and 79 who enter the U.S. from abroad. The Department of State's US-VISIT program then checks the collected information against FBI and DHS criminal and immigration watch lists to identify potential threats to U.S. security. Currently, Washington Dulles International Airport, Atlanta International Airport, Boston Logan International Airport, Chicago O'Hare International Airport and George Bush Houston Intercontinental Airport collect 10 fingerprints. Other airports slated to begin collecting 10 fingerprints in the near future include San Francisco International Airport, Miami International Airport, Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport, Orlando International Airport and New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport. The remaining air, sea and land ports will transition to collecting 10 fingerprints by the end of 2008.
