State, federal laws regulate what you can ask at a job interview

Federal and state laws prohibit employers from discriminating against individuals in connection with all aspects of employment, including the recruitment, interview and hiring process. Accordingly, employers must be careful to avoid requesting information from job applicants which may indicate or suggest that the employer might discriminate against applicants on the basis of statutorily identified classifications or characteristics, including, without limitation, race, color, religion, nationality, gender, pregnancy, marital status, disability or handicap, age and other legally protected categories.
