Ms. Heilman has devoted substantial time to the development of cross-border business relationships and the promotion of women in international business. Since its inception, she has served on the bi-national panel of judges for the Canadian American Business Achievement Award, which was established through the efforts of the Canadian Embassy in Washington in 1995. She received an Athena Award from the Buffalo Niagara Partnership in recognition of her longtime contributions in advancing the status of women in Western New York and in March 2005 she was inducted into the Western New York Women's Hall of Fame.

Established in 1987, the CABC is a nonprofit, issues-oriented organization dedicated to elevating the private-sector perspective on issues that affect Canada and the United States. The Council's activities include high-level briefings on issues of current concern, assistance with practical trade and policy challenges, and providing significant networking opportunities and informative seminars.

It is one of approximately 100 firms in the country listed in America's Greatest Places to Work With a Law Degree. In June 2005, Hodgson Russ received the Carol S. Knox Family-Friendly Employer Award from the Capital District Women's Bar Association. The Firm, which was established in 1817 and is among the oldest law firms in the U.S., is the only law firm that can count two former U.S. presidents, Millard Fillmore and Grover Cleveland, among its alumni.
