Dan has assisted individuals and businesses with legal matters for over 30 years. He now devotes the bulk of his practice to all aspects of employment-based and family-based immigration.

Dan is drawn to the challenge of finding practical, efficient solutions to cross-border problems. He recognizes that immigration law issues require a combination of short-term and long-term planning. This is true whether the client is a multinational business that wants to assure the uninterrupted travel of a mobile workforce, a Canadian business expanding its operations to the United States, or an entrepreneur EB-5 investor who is making a significant investment into a U.S. business.

Dan’s s experience across several legal disciplines enables him to understand and advise clients on both the business and immigration sides of business immigration matters. His diverse background began as a corporate attorney at a large Philadelphia-based firm, where he assisted clients with a broad range of matters, from small business counseling to large transactions. There, he also teamed with a senior attorney to develop an in-house intellectual property practice. When a Middle East-based client came to Dan for the first time for help starting a new U.S. business venture, he was exposed to the practice of immigration law for the first time.

Dan returned to Buffalo in 1985 just before the implementation of the U.S.-Canada Free Trade Agreement in the late 1980s and began to serve cross-border clients. He co-founded and managed the firm Hirsch & Joyce from 1992 to 2004, serving the business and cross-border needs of a broad client base, particularly in the transportation industry.

Dan also served as an adjunct professor of business law for 19 years at the University at Buffalo School of Management, teaching at the undergraduate and graduate (M.B.A.) levels.

Dan exclusively practices U.S. law and is admitted to practice in New York and Pennsylvania.

Dan received the Mark T. Kenmore Mentor of the Year Award from the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA), Upstate NY Chapter, on May 10, 2019.

Dan has been listed in Best Lawyers in America (Immigration Law) since 2009 and was named Best Lawyers’ 2016 Buffalo Immigration Law "Lawyer of the Year." He was previously listed in Buffalo Business First's Who's Who in Law. Dan is also a member of the firm's Immigration Practice, which was awarded a prestigious National Tier 1 ranking by Best Lawyers/U.S. News & World Report. In law school, Dan was book review editor for Buffalo Law Review.
