Daniel Chavez is an attorney in the Hodgson Russ State and Local Tax (SALT) Practice, where he represents individuals and businesses in resolving complex tax disputes. He works with clients navigating audits, appeals, and litigation, offering steady, strategic guidance through matters where the stakes and exposure can be significant.
Before joining Hodgson Russ, Daniel served with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), Office of Chief Counsel, where he handled sophisticated tax controversies involving high‑net‑worth individuals, partnerships, corporations, and closely held entities. His work placed him at the center of the government’s decision‑making process on complex examinations and enforcement actions, giving him direct experience with how taxing authorities evaluate positions, develop cases, and assess risk.
In addition to trial work, Daniel advised IRS leadership on a range of technical and fact‑intensive issues, including conservation easement donations, estate and artwork valuation, civil fraud, foreign asset reporting, and refund claims. He also worked closely with the Department of Justice Tax Division in district court and bankruptcy court matters and assisted in enforcing tax assessments.
