Hodgson Russ LLP is pleased to announce the addition of Daniel B. Johnson as a partner in its nationally recognized State & Local Tax (SALT) legal practice. Johnson's arrival strengthens the firm's ability to serve businesses, executives, investors, and high-net-worth individuals facing high-stakes California tax matters at a time when the need for such counsel is growing.

Based in Sacramento, California, Johnson brings more than a decade of experience from PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP's National Tax Services State and Local Tax practice, where he handled state tax controversies and risk management. He represents businesses and individuals before the California Franchise Tax Board and the Office of Tax Appeals. His practice also includes California residency and multistate tax work.

“We're seeing more clients contending with California tax disputes, audits, and relocation decisions,” said Andrew Wright, Hodgson Russ State & Local Tax Practice Leader. “California presents some of the most complex and consequential tax issues in the country, and resolving them requires attorneys who know the unique legal challenges involved. Daniel's experience, combined with our existing California capabilities, positions us to provide even greater value to those clients.”

Over the past three decades, Hodgson Russ' SALT attorneys have helped clients secure more than $1 billion in tax, interest, and penalty savings through the successful resolution of significant state tax disputes. That track record carries added weight as taxpayers face greater scrutiny from state taxing authorities, particularly as California voters consider Proposition 40, commonly referred to as the Billionaire Tax, and other measures that could prompt changes in residency.

"Clients need more than technical tax advice. They need someone who understands how California's tax rules, enforcement efforts, and policy developments can affect personal and business decisions," said Johnson. "Hodgson Russ has spent decades helping clients navigate that landscape, and I'm excited to bring my California experience to a team that is committed to providing practical, strategic guidance."

Timothy Noonan, Tax Residency Practice Leader and one of the nation's foremost authorities in the field, heads the firm’s California tax team, which includes California-licensed SALT attorneys Daniel Johnson, Daniel Kelly, Daniel Chavez, Emma Savino, and Joseph Tantillo. Together, they focus on residency audits, multistate taxation, and tax controversies.

“For years, our team has taken on state and local tax issues involving some of the country's most difficult tax jurisdictions,” said Noonan. “California remains a key area of focus for many businesses and individuals weighing residency and domicile questions, and demand for sophisticated representation in these matters continues to grow. Daniel Johnson's addition deepens our bench and expands our ability to keep pace.”

Ranked Band 1 by Chambers USA for Tax: State & Local, Hodgson Russ counsels clients throughout the tax lifecycle, from planning and compliance to audits, administrative appeals, litigation, and dispute resolution.
