Estates & Trusts Paralegal
The incumbent provides paralegal assistance to the estates and trusts attorneys and cost effective representation of the firm’s client, ideally dividing his/her time working 50% on tax matters and 50% on Surrogate's Court matters. For Surrogate's Court, he/she drafts documents and various taxing authorities and assists in a variety of tasks for the attorneys in the department. With regard to tax matters, he/she prepares fiduciary income tax returns, estate and gift tax returns and court accountings, using guidelines set by the attorneys.
Qualifications:
- AAS in Paralegal studies; Baccalaureate Degree in Paralegal studies or related field of study preferred.
- Knowledge of legal principles and practices in the estate and trust area at a level normally acquired through and/or equivalent to at least three years full-time paralegal experience.
- At least three years of experience in estate and trust field preferred.
- Knowledge and experience in Surrogate’s Court procedures and with taxing authorities, as well as demonstrated writing and tax preparation ability preferred.
- Experience preparing fiduciary income tax returns, estate and gift tax returns preferred.
- Commensurate combination of education and experience will be considered.
- Customer focused, able to demonstrate specific instances of outstanding client service, including identifying and anticipating needs, delivering to expectations and follow through.
- Demonstrates initiative and perseverance in meeting stated deadlines.
- Competent in the full range of computer software related to the position including relevant databases, MSOffice suite.
